Macclesfield lies in the North-West of England, in the industrial county of Cheshire. Cheshire was originally a Norman county, and it remained relatively constant until the Industrial Revolution, when the county rapidly industrialised. Huge coal-mines and iron-works were erected, and a canal and train infrastructure implemented. After the decline of the Industrial Revolution, the county generally de-industrialised with the major industries being manufacturing and high-technology (the company ICI has it's headquarters in Cheshire).
With house prices in Cheshire currently standing slightly lower than the the national average of £161,300 as of July 2005 at £158,600 (according to Hometrack), more and more people are buying a property for the first time.
